Yesterday, the Hollywood Foreign Press and Dick Clark Productions announced the nominees for next year’s Golden Globe Ceremony. With some odd choices in the movies categories and some other big announcements, it was an eventful day.

Today, focus is on the TV categories. 2024 was a huge year for television, with some massive hits having come to both broadcast and streaming. It’s time to look at some of the big categories.
Best Series – Drama and Comedy
On the drama side, it’s a stacked group. Some of the biggest hits of the year are present, with a couple of surprises. Peacock’s spy thriller ‘Day of the Jackal’ scored one of the big ones with Netflix’s ‘The Diplomat’, Prime Video’s ‘Mr. & Mrs. Smith’ following in suit. The big Emmy Best Drama winner, ‘Shogun’, also scored a big nomination and is most likely the frontrunner to win. Apple’s ‘Slow Horses’ with Gary Oldman also got a special nomination.

Rounding out the top Drama nominees, somewhat controversially, is Netflix’s ‘Squid Game’, which managed to score a nomination before even being officially released. However, it’s not uncommon for studios, networks, and streamers to send out screeners to awards bodies before the general public.
On the comedy side, ‘Abbot Elementary’ and ‘Only Murders In the Building’ both scored awards. Both of which have become lauded shows that are a common appearance at Globes and the Emmys. FX’s ‘The Bear’ also got a nomination, reigniting the debate about the Globes’ definition of what constitutes a comedy. HBO’s celebrated comedy ‘Hacks’ and Netflix newcomers ‘Nobody Wants This’ and ‘The Gentleman’ rounded out the remaining nominees.

Television Acting Nominees
With a whopping eight categories in acting for television, it can be a little hard to keep track of everything. Let’s look at the four major ones.
Actress In A Drama
Despite being left off of the big Drama award, ‘House of the Dragon’ finally gets a nomination for Emma D’Arcy. Legendary actress Kathy Bates also scored another nomination in her career for ‘Matlock’. Anna Sawai was recognized for her already Emmy-winning performance for ‘Shogun’. Maya Erskine (‘Mr. & Mrs. Smith’), Keira Knightly (‘Black Doves’), and Keri Russell (‘The Diplomat’) rounded out the remainder of the nominees.

Actor In A Drama
Hiroyuki Sanada remains the clear leader in the acting competition, basically having swept every award he’s been nominated for this season for his brilliant performance in ‘Shogun’. The remainder of the field is swarmed with veteran actors like Jake Gyllenhall (‘Presumed Innocent), Gary Oldman (‘Slow Horses’), Eddie Redmayne (‘The Day of the Jackal’), and Billy Bob Thornton (‘Landman’). Donald Glover also got a big nomination for ‘Mr. & Mrs. Smith’. This is potentially one of the most stacked nomination fields of the entire ceremony.

Actress In A Comedy Or Musical (Television)
In another stacked nominee choices, comedy actress really has some of the best in TV. Jean Smart got another nomination for ‘Hacks’. Ayo Edebiri and Quinta Brunson both returned to the awards circuit for their amazing portrayals in ‘The Bear’ and ‘Abbott Elementary’ respectively. Selena Gomez returned for ‘Only Murders In the Building’. The biggest surprise on the list is Kathryn Hahn for Marvel’s breakout MCU hit ‘Agatha All Along’.

Supporting Performances
For the actresses, Liza Colon-Zayas scored another nomination for ‘The Bear’, while Kali Reis received one for her breakout role in ‘True Detective: Night Country’. Finishing up is Hannah Einbinder (‘Hacks’), Dakota Fanning (‘Ripley’), Jessica Gunning (‘Baby Reindeer’), and Allison Janney(‘The Diplomat’).
Finally, for supporting actor, Harrison Ford got a nomination for his critically praised turn in ‘Shrinking’. It’s hard to consider him anything but the frontrunner. ‘Shogun’ standout Tadanobu Asano also got a nomination. Others included Javier Bardem (‘Monsters’), Jack Lowden (‘Slow Horses’), Diego Luna (‘La Maquina’), and Ebon Moss-Bachrach (‘The Bear’).
This year’s Golden Globes sure came with some surprises. While fans are still excitedly waiting for the big nominations to be released such as SAG and the Oscars themselves, it gives fans a hint at what to expect.
