Awards season is now in full swing. And the biggest one so far revealed their nominations earlier this morning. ‘Emilia Perez’ led the film category. There were a number of standouts, surprises, and snubs already this morning.

While the Golden Globes have faded in recent years due to controversy about the selections as well as the award body themselves, it is still considered a prestigious ceremony in its own right. Still, it’s considered a bellwether for the bigger awards later this year, such as SAG and the Oscars themselves.

Best Drama, Comedy, and Animated

In the best drama category, Warner Bros. Epic ‘Dune: Part Two’ did manage to score a nod, while stars Timothee Chalamet and Zendaya were left off of the nominees list for the sci-fi epic. The Bob Dylan biopic ‘A Complete Unknown’ also managed a best picture nomination as well.

Rounding out the remaining nominees is awards contenders ‘The Brutalist’ from A24 and ‘Conclave’ from Focus Features. Orion and Amazon’s ‘Nickel Boys’ scored the final nomination.

On the musical or comedy side, Oscar nominations frontrunners ‘Anora’ and ‘Wicked’ were present. Other surprises included Amazon’s erotic drama ‘Challengers’ and the horror film ‘The Substance’. The Jesse Eisenberg/Kieran Culkin dramadey ‘A Real Pain’ scored the final nomination.

Six films managed to make it into the animated category. Massive hits this year such as ‘Inside Out 2’, ‘Moana 2’ and ‘The Wild Robot’ all scored nods, with surprising awards hit ‘Flow’ getting in as well. IFC’s ‘Memoirs of a Snail’ and the British hit ‘Wallace and Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl’ also managed to score nominations.

The Acting Categories

This year’s acting nominees are a bit of a mixed bag. From expected performers to surprises, it’s an interesting look to be sure.

In dramas, suspected frontrunners Nicole Kidman are present, with surprises such as Pamela Anderson and Angelina Jolie making it in as well. On the male side, Oscar frontrunners Adrien Brody and Ralph Fiennes are present, with some unexpected nods to Sebastian Stan and Timothee Chalamet (for ‘A Complete Unknown’).

Musical and Comedy seems to offer the same mixed bag. While Cynthia Erivo, Mikey Madison, and Karla Sofia Gascon are expected, Demi More and Amy Adams have proven to be a surprise. Zendaya’s praised performance in ‘Challengers’ was also honored with a nomination.

For the men, Jesse Eisenberg is there, with some very unexpected nominations coming for Hugh Grant, Jesse Plemons, Glen Powell and Sebastian Stan (‘A Different Man’). It’s an eclectic batch of nominees to be sure.

Supporting Performances:

Because the Golden Globes combine the nominees for supporting, it looks like closer to the expected Oscar contenders. Frontrunner Ariana Grande scored a nomination, while predicted Oscar nominees Felicity Jones and Zoe Saldana are there as well. Selena Gomez and Isabella Rossellini round out the list of five.

Praised performances for Yura Borisov, Kieran Culkin, Edward Norton and Denzel Washington also made it in. There are also some shocking nominations for Guy Pearce and Jeremy Strong. This is the second acting nomination for the controversial Donald Trump biopic ‘The Apprentice’.

Directing, Writing and Score

The three most likely directors for the Best Director Oscar were all present, with Sean Baker, Edward Berger, and Brady Corbet present. Jacques Audiard was also thrown in, with ‘Substance’ director Coralie Fargeat and Indian Director Payal Kapadia also making it into the nominations.

Peter Straughan received one for ‘Conclave, and the duo of Brady Corbet and Mona Fastvold got the nomination for ‘The Brutalist’.

in Score, Hans Zimmer notched another nomination in his storied career for ‘Dune: Part Two’. Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross also are nominated for ‘Challengers’. The biggest surprise is definitely Kris Bowers getting a surprising nomination for ‘The Wild Robot’. Volker Bertlmann, Daniel Blumberg, and Clement Ducol with Camille are the rounded out nominees.
