In the flurry of negative news that has surrounded Square Enix the past month, fans have been speculating just what games were going to be cancelled after the publisher announced they were going to make cuts.

One of the games that had been brought up recently, considering it has been roughly three years since any update following the game’s announcement, has been the RPG sequel Dragon Quest XII. While it wouldn’t make too much sense to cancel this game given the franchise’s long history (and massive sales success in Japan), there was some doubt especially considering the passing of longtime artist for the franchise Akira Toriyama.

Yesterday, producer Yuji Horii took to Twitter/X to alleviate fans concerns to tell them that the game was still in development. While he couldn’t say much at the time, he did acknowledge the series’ 38th anniversary. It does appear the game is still a significant ways off. Although Square Enix is expected to be present (in some capacity) at both IGN Live on June 7-9 and Summer Games Fest.

Whether or not Dragon Quest XII will be seen there remains to be seen. The series also has the Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake in development, that is expected later this year, to tide fans over while they wait for details on the next installment.
