After 2019’s Avengers: Endgame, it seemed that the time had come to an end for Robert Downey Jr’s iconic portrayal of Tony Stark/Iron Man. It was a fitting conclusion and brought his story full circle. Now it seems there may be more to the story.

In an interview with Empire Magazine, as reported by The Hollywood Reporter, Downy seems to be hinting there’s a chance we’ll see him again.

“It’s too integral a part of my DNA. That role chose me. And look, I always say, never, ever bet against Kevin Feige. It is a losing bet. He’s the house. He will always win.”

With Marvel struggling to rebuild support, it wouldn’t come as a complete shock if they chose not to go their current course and revert to a better time. Rumors have persisted at a film in the works starring the original Avengers, possibly as part of their Secret Wars plans.

Tony Stark may have died at the end of Endgame, but given the multiversal nature of the current MCU, it would be very easy for them to find a storyline in which Tony would be returning.

To be clear, as of now Marvel has not announced any plans to bring characters out of retirements, including Downey as well as Chris Evans and Scarlett Johannsson. But fans have requested it and it seems to be one that Marvel may want to use to make Secret Wars a bigger event.

The MCU has been in a rebuilding phase the last couple years, with two low-rated films that both struggled at the box office. As well as a slew of Disney+ releases that had very average reviews and ratings. Disney CEO Bob Iger has spoken about the struggles, attributing them to Marvel simply making too many things at once.

Since then, Marvel has slowed down, with only a couple Disney+ releases this year (including the current-running X-Men 97) and only one film, this summer’s blockbuster Deadpool and Wolverine.

Will Downey be back for Secret Wars? Or will he return in a potential Iron Man 4 or another MCU project? Or will he return at all? Only time will tell.
