Yesterday Warner Bros made the surprise announcement that they’re going to return to the world of their genre defining sci-fi franchise The Matrix.

A fifth film in the franchise is officially in the works, with directors Lily and Lana Wachowski taking a backseat and Cabin in the Woods and The Martian writer Drew Goddard coming on to write and direct.

Goddard is said to have gone to Warner Bros himself, and the studio apparently liked his idea enough to greenlight the next movie. The studio did not give any plot details.

It was also unclear if franchise veterans Keanu Reeves or Carrie-Anne Moss will be returning for this new movie.

The Matrix has had a very rocky road. The original film is considered one of the all time greats in sci-fi action films. Its sequel, Reloaded, is often praised for its great visuals and wild action scenes, but often criticized for its lack of direction story wise. Revelations was considered a mixed bag as well, but not nearly as well received as the previous two.

Then in 2021 came the fourth film, Resurrections, that did not do well critically or with audiences, earning a 63% each, and only managed to make $157 million worldwide.

Will fans be willing to buck the trend and return to theaters for another outing of The Matrix? WB seems to think so, it will be seen if they are right.

No release date has currently been given for the film.
