This weekend saw the big rematch between nostalgic franchises, as Ghostbusters Frozen Empire and Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire went head to head. And the results were a roaring success.
Box Office Results At A Glance:
- Godilla x Kong: The New Empire : $80.0 Million
- Ghostbusters Frozen Empire: $15.7 Million
- Dune: Part 2: $11.1 Million
- Kung Fu Panda 4: $10.2 Million
- Immaculate: $3.3 Million

The Monsterverse film, which was tracking with expectations of $45-55 million, soared past those expectations with a whopping $80 million haul. The film also performed incredibly well overseas, bringing its global haul to $194 million and counting.
The fifth film in the franchise, which seas the two titular titans battling it out against a new enemy known as the Skar King, proved to be a divisive film with critics but has been heavily regarded as a massive smash with fans, earning an A- Cinemascore and a 93% on Rotten Tomatoes.

Last weekend’s winner struggled to keep up, with Ghostbusters falling a massive 65% in its second weekend. Divisive audiences and excitement for Godzilla x Kong clearly drove people away from Sony’s horror-comedy. It brought in $15.7 million.
The Denis Villeneuve epic Dune: Part 2 kept a strong performance in its fifth weekend, nearly edging out Ghostbusters with an impressive $11.1 million haul. The current biggest film of the year has also crossed the $600 million at the box office globally.

Jack Black’s animated family comedy Kung Fu Panda 4 continued its reign as the top children’s movie with $10.2 million in its third weekend. The film continues to screen well for families and small children as there is still little competition for that demographic.
Rounding out the top 5 is Sydney Sweeney’s violent nun film Immaculate. Neon’s horror film continues to impress with a small $3.3 million but with the small budget of the film it’s been viewed as a huge success.
Godzilla x Kong appears to have a couple solid weeks ahead. With Dev Patel’s Monkey Man screening well, it may generate some buzz but the monster smash should still prevail. It seems the next major competition will be Alex Garland’s controversial action film Civil War, which debuts nationwide April 12.
