Last week, the Scream horror franchise got a jolt in the arm after a turbulent few months of uncertainty with the return of series star Neve Campbell. Casting appears to now be fully underway, as another franchise veteran is in talks to return as well.

In a report by The Hollywood Reporter, it’s revealed that director (and co-creator) Kevin Williamson’s seventh film is looking to indeed bring back star Courtney Cox. Cox, who was recently seen in last year’s Scream VI, will of course be reprising her role as journalist Gale Weathers.

After the last few months, which saw the very public firing of breakout star Melissa Barrera and departure of one of the newest scream queens Jenna Ortega, it appeared a seventh film was not going to happen for a while, until Campbell and Williamson reunited to bring the film back on track.

Scream VI ended up being the highest grossing film of the franchise, earning rave reviews for its plentiful scares, fantastic casting, and perfect use of its New York setting. It also received plenty of its detractors that complained of “plot armor” from various characters as well as its villain reveal that felt by many to be out of place.

Regardless of which side of the fence fans sit on, Williamson has an uphill battle with Scream 7 to continue to the franchise after such a divisive period.

No release date has been set at this time by Paramount or Spyglass Media.
