Universal Pictures seems to be fast tracking its dinosaur adventure series’ next installment. Last month it was confirmed that the Rogue One and The Creator director Gareth Edwards had boarded the director’s chair for the next (as of now untitled) Jurassic World entry. Even with a new director, it was a question on if they could get production up and running in time to make the announced July 2025 release date.

This morning, the newest film took a step forward. The film, rumored under the name Jurassic City, has been reported by The Hollywood Reporter that Oscar nominee Scarlett Johansson is in talks to star in the lead role of the film.

Johansson is no stranger to the big budget blockbuster, having just come off of the massive success of playing Black Widow among multiple entries of the Marvel Cinematic Universe as well as various other films from indie darlings to massive hits. She should be more than capable of tackling the Jurassic dinos.

This will be the seventh entry in the Jurassic series, a franchise that has made over $5 billion total, with the three Jurassic World movies all taking in over a billion each. It’s unclear just how this new film will tie into the Jurassic Park or Jurassic World storyline, but more info should be coming in the next few months.

As of now, no former cast members from the previous films are expected to return for this movie, with Universal wanting to set a new tone for the future.

The next Jurassic film hits theaters July 2, 2025.
