Todd Phillips’ dark, gritty take on DC’s most infamous villain returns this fall, with Joaquin Phoenix returning to his Oscar winning role. While it’s been known for a while that the film would be a musical, first details about the film’s musical numbers have begun to emerge.

In a new report by Variety, the movie starring Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga is now reported to feature around 15 musical numbers throughout the film. It’s also being described as a “jukebox musical”, opting to feature covers of other songs as opposed to creating original musical numbers. This is all according to insiders who have seen the current cut of the film. Details about which songs would be included are still unknown at this time.

The reports that the majority of the film will be taking place inside of Arkham with the musical numbers being more of a “dreamlike” state instead of the classic ensemble pieces seen in other film like Mamma Mia!.

It’s still unsure when fans will be getting their first look at the sequel, which will be DC’s only theatrical release this year. The original Joker debuted its first trailer at CinemaCon in 2019. With this year’s CinemaCon happening in April, it’s very possible Warner Bros. will be debuting the first look there as well.

Joker: Folie A Deux looks to repeat the same success Phillips surprisingly got with the original film, becoming the first R rated title to cross the $1 billion mark. The film also went on to score multiple Oscar nominations, including two big wins for Score and Actor. The sequel has received a massive influx of cash with a $200 million budget and adding stars Lady Gaga, Catherine Keener, and Brendan Gleeson.
