The classic RPG franchise Grandia is finally returning after a long hiatus. Well, sort of. Earlier this week, GungHo Online Entertainment announced that the Grandia HD Collection would be coming to the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One systems beginning March 26.

The Grandia series was a bestselling RPG franchise during the PlayStation days, garnering a 89 on Metacritic, with a mixed reviewed sequel on the Sega Dreamcast and PlayStation 2.

The sequel dropped a bit, hitting a 71 on Metacritic. The HD Collection combines both games with renewed sprites and textures, although it appears there aren’t any significant differences to the game.

Both games propelled what was already a wonderful time for the jRPG genre and continued to grow the popularity of the genre, especially for Western audiences. It’s unclear whether successor Grandia III will receive the HD treatment or if successful sales could lead to a new entry.

It’s the latest case of classic games being ported to main generation consoles. It’s a trend in the industry that’s been used to offset longer than usual development times for new titles. This is hot on the heels of last month’s well received Persona 3: Reload.
