Ever since 2019’s Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, fans have been eagerly awaiting the next entry of the franchise to come to theaters. With a plethora of announced, then cancelled, then announced again films, it’s been clear to see why fans have been frustrated with Lucasfilm’s output recently.

One such project that was announced nearly three years ago was Rogue Squadron. This fighter pilot themed spinoff was to be helmed by Monster and Wonder Woman director Patty Jenkins. As part of a restructuring of the film slate, it was announced last year that film was off the table.

But on the Talking Pictures Podcast, Jenkins offered a new glimmer of hope for those still waiting for the movie. She mentioned that she had previously detached herself from Rogue Squadron to do Wonder Woman 3, another film that got lost in the shuffle of the DC Universe reboot. She mentioned that since then, she has spoken with those at Lucasfilm and she is once again working on a draft of the script.

“When I left Star Wars to do Wonder Woman 3, and I started working on that, we talked about, ‘Well, maybe I’ll come back to Star Wars after Wonder Woman 3,’ so we started a deal for that to happen. When Wonder Woman 3 then went away, Lucasfilm and I were like ‘Oh, we’ve got to finish this deal.’ We finished the deal right as the strike was beginning, so I now owe a draft of Star Wars.”

This is a small update for the plagued studio, who has been dealt with underperforming titles on Disney+ as well as last year’s gigantic flop with Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny. Lucasfilm does have several other projects in development, with The Mandalorian and Grogu set to begin filming later this year and Andor season 2 set for early next year.

Other Star Wars films in various stages of development are director Taika Waititi”s untitled movie, the Rey Skywalker solo project, James Mangold’s Dawn of the Jedi film, and several other shows set for Disney+.

No release date has been set yet, as Rogue Squadron is still in early development.
