During an extremely thrilling game between the San Francisco 49ers and the Kansas City Chiefs, Hollywood debuted some of their biggest movie trailers of the year.
One thing of note is that because Super Bowl ad space is so expensive, many studios made the controversial call of only showing a few seconds on TV followed by the “full trailer online now” at the end. It was an expected trend that has upset several people.
Still, fans were treated to some incredible and unexpected looks at some of the year’s biggest movies. Here are some of the standouts:
The Fall Guy
The Ryan Gosling/Emily Blunt action/romance film from the director of Bullet Train and Deadpool 2 looks like a lot of fun. However, the original trailer did a better job at hyping for the film. The Taylor Swift bit at the end was a great laugh out loud moment, though.
Monkey Man
This Dev Patel directed film took a shot at the John Wick formula and looks engaging and fun enough, and with Jordan Peele’s backing there’s probably something there. It’s a crowd pleaser, which could make a great, unexpected summer blockbuster.
IF
The newest film from A Quiet Place director John Krasinski played up one of the best cold opens in The Office history as Ryan Reynolds interviewed Randall Park as Krasinski. It was a fun little bit, even if most of the footage shown was stuff already seen in the other trailers.
Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes
While it’s visually stunning, this newest sci fi sequel spot proved to be one of the weaker ones. Without Andy Serkis returning and still not justifying why another Apes movie is needed, it looks fun but at the same time, unnecessary.
Despicable Me 4
There was no footage shown, which makes it the single weakest “look” at the film yet. But…there’s a hilarious appeal to the Minions and the way they poked fun at AI was a great way to get people hyped if Universal wasn’t ready to show any new footage after last month’s trailer.
Twisters
For the 90s kids out there, this anticipated sequel didn’t give much of the story. But with Glen Powell coming off the “better than it should have been” Anyone But You and adding in Anthony Ramos, Daisy Edgar Jones, and directed by Minari‘s Lee Isaac Chung gives hope that this could be a wonderful follow-up.
Shogun
While TV and Streaming shows usually take a back seat to the oppressively expensive Super Bowl ad buy space, Hulu took a chance to show off their epic Feudal Japan based series, Shogun. Featuring some striking visuals and powerful dramatic moments, Shogun is already preparing itself as one of the biggest streaming shows of the year.
A Quiet Place: Day One
Without Krasinski returning to direct, there was a reduction of interest in this prequel to the monster horror franchise. The always great Lupita Nyong’o headlines with some tense moments and some visuals giving audiences their best looks yet at the Noise Monsters that terrorized them during the first two movies.
Deadpool and Wolverine
The Marvel film previously known as Deadpool 3 finally got its first look with Ryan Reynolds’ trademark snark and action packed. The trailer that dropped afterwards let any detractors know that yes, this movie will stay very R rated. There was only a brief glimpse at Hugh Jackman’s return as Wolverine, but for a first look, it got people souring on the MCU back excited.
Wicked
One of the most successful Broadway shows of the modern era finally gets its film adaptation 20 years in the making. The trailer features an all star cast led by Cynthia Ervio and Ariana Grande, even if some very distracting CGI, confusing scene placement, and lack of musical numbers reduced excitement.
The Super Bowl is always a great place for big movie trailers, and we got some great ones here. What was your favorite? Sound off in the comments below!
