Hot on the heels of the success of Mean Girls this past weekend, studios have already begun looking at other musical adaptations they can make.

During the closing night for Shucked on Broadway, the runaway musical comedy success that debuted last spring, producer Mike Bosner announced that a film adaptation was in development. This is on top of an already planned national tour for the stage production of the Tony and Grammy nominated musical.

The film adaptation is being produced by Mandalay pictures. Robert Horn, the writer of the stage production, is returning for screenwriting duties. As of now, no director or cast is attached. Given the massive success Hollywood has had withing bringing back Danielle Brooks for The Color Purple and Renee Rapp for Mean Girls, it wouldn’t be surprising if some of the show’s major cast members like Alex Newell, Kevin Cahoon, Andrew Durand, and John Behlmann become at least rumored to return from their Broadway roles. Newell won a Tony for the role of Lulu, so she could very well be the frontrunner to reprise her role.

No further information was given, including a potential release date. We’ll learn more as the year goes on. The national tour of Shucked begins this fall.
