It’s a new year, and 2024 has a lot to look forward to. Here we’re going to break down each month of the year with exactly what’s going to be the single film to look forward to.

Note: All release dates are current as of publication (Found by IMDB) and are subject to change, particularly the films currently slated for the second half of the year.

January

January is typically known as a “dumping ground” for films that studios know are either bad or simply won’t make money. There has been a move the past few years to get some sleeper hits thrown in (like M3gan last year turned out to actually be a fun experience)

Most anticipated:

Release: January 12

This both remake/reboot of the 2004 smash hit borrows from the mega successful Broadway musical of the same name and features an all star cast including rising stars Angourie Rice and Renee Rapp (who is reprising her Regina George role directly from the stage adaptation). From the trailers, it’s looking like a Gen Z look at the story and appears to definitely be appealing to that specific demographic, which may leave others behind.

Also Coming in January:

Beekeeper, I.S.S., Night Swim Soul (Re-Release)

February

February used to be a huge month for romantic comedies, and that was typically it due to the Valentine’s holiday. But as audience attitudes have changed, we’ve seen a lot of action films and horror films also begin to drop in February. It makes it a much more competitive month than it used to be.

Most Anticipated of the Month:

Release: February 2

From Director Matthew Vaughn (Kick Ass, Kingsman: The Secret Service) comes this action comedy with a delightful all star cast led by Bryce Dallas Howard and Sam Rockwell. There’s been much discussion about the trailer being overplayed, but it looks like a blast of a film that should be a wonderful time at the movies:

Also Coming:

Lisa Frankenstein, Bob Marley: One Love

March

The Spring Break season officially goes into high gear and with it, typically a lot of family friendly and four quadrant films like superhero films in this month.

Most Anticipated:

Release: March 1

This film, which was controversially pushed from its November release date to accommodate the ongoing actor’s strike at the time, finally makes its debut. Denis Villeneuve has proven himself to be one of this generation’s best sci-fi directors, and the second half of Frank Herbert’s classic story looks to be as groundbreaking and intense as the 2021 original film. With another all star cast, this looks like an incredible time and a contender to be among 2024’s best.

Also Anticipated:

Imaginary, Kung Fu Panda 4, Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire

April

April has taken May’s place in recent years as the official launch of the summer movie season. So expect the beginning deluge of major event films. This April is admittedly looking a little weak, but there’s some potential in a few titles.

Most Anticipated:

Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire

Release: April 12

While nobody is expecting this sequel to the 2021 hit to be as good as last years unexpectedly phenomenal Godzilla Minus One, in a pure “dumb fun” sense, this monster brawler film looks to deliver some massive spectacle and some real fun action moments, even if it’s most likely going to be light on plot and logic.

Also coming:

The First Omen, Challengers, Civil War

May

The summer is going to be in full swing here, with some major releases and also the beginning of major convention season (so expect many trailers and new looks to occur this month)

Most Anticipated:

Release: May 24

George Miller returns to his post apocalyptic epic franchise with another dose of sand and gasoline soaked mayhem. Featuring Anya Taylor-Joy and Chris Hemsworth, this is a film that looks to be an action packed, enjoyable event that, from the trailer, looks absolutely gorgeous.

Also Anticipated:

Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, The Strangers Chapter 1, The Fall Guy

June

As summer continues, June tends to be a very hit or miss month (see last year where it became more miss than hit), but does offer some major new releases.

Most Anticipated:

Release: June 14

Pixar returns after a rough couple years with this sequel to one of the best films the studio has ever made. With a more mature story, and returning stars Amy Poehler and Phyllis Smith headlining the film, it’s very hopeful they can recapture that magic the studio was known for.

Also Anticipated:

Ballerina: A John Wick Story, The Bikeriders, A Quiet Place: Day One

July

Usually the second biggest moviegoing month of the year (outside December), July always has some of the biggest hits. And in this case, potentially one of the biggest films of the year.

Most Anticipated:

Deadpool 3

Release: July 26

Despite the lackluster performance of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in the past two years, Ryan Reynolds returning as his raunchy, foul mouthed mercenary mutant brings a lot to be desired to the table. Accompanied by Hugh Jackman (returning as Wolverine, of course), and an all star cast, the film looks to lampoon the original Fox films as well as the MCU in hilarious fashion. Despite some misses, it’s hard not to be anticipated for this film.

Also Anticipated:

Despicable Me 4, Twisters

August

August is looking extremely light this year, with a lot of potential misses and disappointments. But there’s one film that really stands above the rest in terms of anticipation.

Most Anticipated:

Alien: Romulus

Release: August 16

While plot details (and really anything) are being kept extremely under wraps, this new entry in the struggling sci-fi/horror franchise hopes to reinvigorate interest. Adding stars Isabela Merced and Cailee Spaeny gains some interest, but it’s director Fede Alvarez (Evil Dead 2014, Don’t Breathe) that really gets my interest up for the film. Hopefully buzz can increase as 20th Century Studios ups their marketing for the film in the next few months.

Also Anticipated:

Borderlands

September

As the fall season begins, expect plenty of horror films and family films to begin hitting. Or in the case of this month’s most anticipated…both. As of now the releases look sparse, but new announcements and delays could change the landscape of the month.

Most Anticipated:

Beetlejuice 2

Release: September 6

Tim Burton returns to one of his most famous films, with Michael Keaton donning the black and white striped suit once again. While Burton and his team have kept information about this film very under wraps, what little has come out has been great. Joining Keaton are returning stars Winona Ryder and Catherine O’Hara and Jenna Ortega joins the cast as well. When trailers and posters drop in the spring/summer, we should get a better idea for what Burton is going for with this sequel nearly 30 years in the making.

Also Anticipated:

Transformers One, Saw XI

October

Spooky Season goes into full swing as horror takes center stage, and there should be some giant releases…at least normally. Unfortunately the calendar this year looks incredibly light.

Most Anticipated:

Smile 2

While plot details are again, being kept under wraps, this sequel to the 2022 viral smash success looks to be as eerie and creepy as its predecessor. With a new look at the Smile Monster and some (hopefully) more genuine scares, it could be another surprise hit of the Halloween season.

Also Anticipated:
Nothing, as of now there’s no other major releases planned outside of a bunch of “unknown” titles.

November

November usually hits the beginning of the Holiday season, and with it studios begin throwing out what they believe will be their biggest movies but also many of their awards hopefuls. It’s worth noting that November and December could shift dramatically as films get picked up in the festival circuit this spring and summer.

Most Anticipated:

Wicked: Act One

Release: November 27

This first half of this adaptation of one of Broadway’s biggest smash successes features Cynthia Ervio and Ariana Grande. The move to split the musical into two films has proven controversial, but here’s hoping that Director Jon M Chu, who already proved his musical chops in In The Heights, can justify it. It does have a bold take on the Wizard of Oz mythos that may turn off those unfamiliar with the musical already, but fans have been highly anticipating it. The play itself is phenomenal, so if both films can capture that magic, they may just become two of the best films of this year and next.

Also Anticipated:

Venom 3

December

The end of the month features some of the heaviest hitters as the Christmas season usually drives in hordes of moviegoers and awards voting heads into full swing. And as such, there’s a wide variety of hits to have this month.

Most Anticipated: (TIE)

Nosferatu

Release: December 25

Director Robert Eggers has discerned himself as one of the best and most unique directors of his generation. And this new vampire horror film looks right up the alley of the director who gave us The Witch. Shot in black and white and featuring an all star cast including Lily Rose Depp, Bill Skarsgard, Willem Dafoe, Nicholas Hoult, and others…this is a film to significantly look forward to.

Sonic the Hedgehog 3

Release: December 20

This sequel to both shockingly fun video game adaptations brings back Ben Schwartz as the titular hero and Idris Elba returning as Knuckles. While not much else is known besides it will feature the villainous hedgehog Shadow, and lingering questions involving if Jim Carrey will return as Dr. Ivo Robtonik, the franchise has gained enough good faith with fans to garner interest even on little knowledge.

While there’s plenty more to be excited for, and many of the “untitled” releases will be revealed on the festival circuit or at CinemaCon in April, there’s plenty of reasons to be anticipated for the year in film ahead. Some nervousness as well, as some of these films could easily fall into the disappointing category, but as for now, it’s nice to have some exciting films on the horizon.
